NRG Services to be represented in the 2019 Simpson Desert Challenge for Youngcare.
NRG Services are proud to support Project Supervisor Joel Bunter, as he prepares for the 2019 Simpson Desert Challenge to raise much needed funds and awareness for disability accommodation provider, Youngcare.
The nine-day challenge will take place at the end of May 2019 and will see Joel trek 250km across the Simpson Desert and climb more than 1,000 sand dunes while carrying a 10kg backpack through temperatures of up to 40 degrees.
In preparation for the upcoming trek, Joel has been cycling and running as much as possible outside of his busy work schedule and is looking forward to an upcoming 12-week intensive training program with fellow trekkers.
Joel said his mother’s career in disability and mental health inspired him to register for the challenge.
“Due to my mother’s career, I have developed compassion for young people living with disabilities and understand the financial difficulties not-for-profit organisations face under the National Disability Insurance Scheme. I have been fortunate to experience good health, a fulfilling life and career, and raising funds for Youngcare is an opportunity for me to make a difference to the lives of young people with disabilities and bring attention to the challenges they face every day.”
With the trek sure to be mentally and physically demanding, Joel said he will keep a few things in mind.
“To push through the challenge, I will focus on knowing that what I endure will help create awareness of the difficulties faced by families of young people with high care needs. I will also know that the support from my family, friends and all of those who have help me reach my fundraising target will go a long way to support Youngcare.”
Youngcare is a not-for-profit organisation creating choice and independence for young people with high care needs by providing fully accessible and age-appropriate living spaces, grants for equipment and home modifications, and support through a national phone line. To participate in the trek Joel needs to raise $35,000 for Youngcare.
