In response to the industries skill shortage, NRG Services have partnered with TAFE Queensland to create an Certificate II Electrotechnology (Career Start) Refrigeration program. School students, interested in the Refrigeration Mechanical trade, who undertake this course will gain a nationally recognised qualification, hands on – real work experience on site, and the opportunity to learn first hand about what a future career in the industry might look like.
Ten students from St. Mary’s College and Toowoomba Grammar School are currently undertaking the qualification; delivered as a mixture of theory work and practical on site learning. In a school-based capacity, students undertake the theory work with TAFE QLD educators and are now onsite with NRG Services Tradespeople.
Program Coordinator Grant McMillan from NRG Services says “We are shining a spotlight on the HVAC-R trade and the future of the industry. Closing this skills gap will depend on inspiring our career starters and these students have proven the value the next generation have to offer our industry”.
As part of their practical work experience, the students are building a cold room trailer for their schools – valued at over $20,000. The materials for the trailer, along with a tool kit – presented to each student, have all been contributed to the course at NRG Services cost or by the generosity of the program sponsors. The trailers can then be raffled to benefit the school or kept and used for school and community functions – either providing great results to the schools and students.
We would like to thank our students, their parents, St Mary’s College, Toowoomba Grammar School and TAFE QLD who helped us to celebrate our launch and of course our very generous sponsors for their amazing donations;
