Vena Energy’s Wandoan South BESS is Queensland’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS), which is currently under construction.
NRG Services is executing the electrical and mechanical works for the $120 million project, which will have a capacity of 100 megawatts and capable of storing 150 megawatt hours of energy – enough to power up to 57,000 average homes annually.
The Project includes battery systems, power conversion systems, step-up transformers, a 132/33kV substation, control systems and all other electrical, civil, mechanical, and auxiliary plant works necessary for a fully functioning BESS facility. The Project will also feature a unique battery control software and operating system designed by Doosan GridTech.
Additionally, NRG Services were engaged to carry out the concept and detailed design of the mechanical services, which included the design of the critical cooling systems, air diffusion systems and critical HVAC and building control systems. The design comprised of energy efficient solutions, critical cooling, and control redundancy to enable 100% uptime of the BESS operation.
As we near the 50% battery module installation milestone, our team have installed over 10,500 of the 22,000 battery modules into 816 dual rack frames; positioned the site Auxiliary Transformers, all HV Skids and their associated Inverters; are currently proceeding through the termination and early commissioning processes of the HV / LV and the DC systems to enable Back Energisation Testing; completion of all general light, power, security and communication systems, as well as the fire detection and the IG541 Gas Suppression system.
HVAC systems have been completed with the installation of 19 Computer Room Air Conditioning Systems in an N+1 configuration, air plenums, and building wide air distribution. The mechanical team have now started the commission phase of works including detailed pre-commissioning, commissioning and performance guarantee testing complete with commissioning of the HVAC & Building Controls System and integration to the site wide SCADA System.
